What Sets a Prototype Apart from a Commercially Ready Product?

Building a working prototype often feels like the hardest part of the journey is behind you. You have successfully proven the concept, the demo is capturing the attention of your stakeholders, and the finish line seems well within reach. However, the reality of hardware development surprises many: the gap between a prototype and a market-ready product is vastly wider, more complex, and more expensive to cross than the initial jump from a raw idea to that first functional demo. What Defines a True Prototype? A prototype is engineered to answer one fundamental question:   Does the core concept work? To answer that question, it doesn’t need to survive a rugged drop test, pass strict international regulatory reviews, or be optimized for a fast-moving assembly line. It simply needs to prove that the underlying technology is sound under controlled conditions. Market readiness, however, demands answers to an entirely different set of challenges: Consistency:   Can this device be manu...
